What Troon North is
Troon North vacation rentals put you in the far northern reach of Scottsdale, where the city gives way to the high Sonoran Desert. The area takes its name from Troon Mountain and from Troon North Golf Club, which made it famous. It is a landscape of granite boulder piles, saguaros and wide views, a few degrees cooler than central Phoenix and a world away from it in feel.
People come here for three things: golf, hiking and quiet. There is no nightlife to speak of. There are dark skies, coyotes at dusk and mornings that start with the light on the mountain. If that sounds right, this is the part of Scottsdale to stay in.
Troon Ranch Casitas
Troon Ranch Casitas is our place here: three casitas on a working horse ranch beneath Troon Mountain. The setting is rustic and Southwestern, with cedar ceilings, wood and leather, and patios that look out over the ranch and the mountain. Guests share a pool and spa set among the boulders, and a putting green.
You can book a single casita or the whole ranch.
- Cabin Casita: one bedroom, sleeps two
- Loft Casita: two bedrooms, sleeps four
- The whole ranch: four bedrooms, three bathrooms, sleeps eight
- Shared pool and spa in the boulders, putting green
- A working horse ranch; no pets for guests
Troon North Golf Club
Troon North Golf Club is a few minutes from the ranch. Its two courses, Monument and Pinnacle, were laid out through the natural washes and boulder fields of the foothills, and they are on many visiting golfers' lists for a reason: the holes play around the desert rather than through it, and the views from most tees are long.
Tee times in winter and spring go early, so book them when you book the casita. Expect a dress code typical of upscale clubs. Other well-known courses, including TPC Scottsdale and Grayhawk, are within a short drive, so a golf group can play a different course each day from the same base.
Pinnacle Peak and the desert trails
Pinnacle Peak Park is minutes from the ranch, and its trail is one of the best introductions to the desert in Scottsdale: well-kept, steady, with views that open up as you climb. Go early in the warmer months. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve, with well over a hundred miles of trails, has trailheads within a short drive, from easy loops to long days.
Horseback riding is a natural fit here, and stables in the area run guided trail rides. Mountain biking and desert jeep tours are also close.
Who the casitas suit
The Cabin Casita is built for a couple: a golf trip for two, a quiet anniversary, a month of winter sun. The Loft Casita suits a couple with kids or two friends. The whole ranch suits a golf foursome with partners, two families traveling together, or a small team that wants a few days away from screens.
Couples staying a month or longer are a big part of who we host here. Stays of thirty nights or more are welcome at discounted rates, priced on request.
The seasons and the night sky
Troon North sits higher than central Phoenix, and it is usually a little cooler, which makes a real difference in spring and fall. Winter days are mild and clear, with cold nights; pack a warm layer for the patio. Summer days are hot, so golf and hiking move to the first hours of light, and afternoons belong to the pool.
With the city lights well to the south, the night sky here is darker than in central Scottsdale. On a clear night from the ranch you can see far more stars than in town, and the quiet is part of what guests remember. Mornings often bring quail and rabbits across the ranch, and the horses are a fixture of the view.
Spring brings wildflowers and cactus blooms to the desert around Pinnacle Peak, usually from March into April, and it is one of the best times of year to walk the trails.
Getting around and practical notes
You will want a car. Troon Ranch is about forty minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor and about thirty-five from Old Town Scottsdale, so plan dinners in town as an outing. Grocery stores, restaurants and coffee are closer, in the shopping centers along the main roads nearby.
The ranch is a guest-only property: no parties or events, no visitors beyond registered guests, and outdoor noise ends at 10 pm. Troon Ranch takes no pets. Minimum stays vary by season and lengthen during the January to March event weeks. Check dates with Check availability on the Troon Ranch page, or call us at (480) 781-0717.
