Why teams book a house for a corporate retreat
A corporate retreat in Scottsdale usually has one goal underneath the agenda: get people who work together to know each other a little better. A hotel makes that hard. Everyone disappears to their room at nine, breakfast is a buffet line, and the only shared space is a lobby with strangers in it.
A house changes the dynamic. People cross paths in the kitchen in the morning, end up on the same patio in the evening, and talk about things that never come up on a video call. For a leadership team, a founding group or a department of eight to thirty people, booking one house for lodging is often the best decision in the plan.
What the house is for, and what it is not
We want to be precise here, because companies plan carefully and deserve a clear answer. Our houses are guest accommodation. They are where your team sleeps, eats breakfast, swims and unwinds. They are not event venues. Receptions, client dinners, presentations to outside guests and anything involving people beyond the registered guests belong at a venue. Outdoor noise ends at 10 pm, in line with Scottsdale and Paradise Valley rules.
If you are picturing some working time at the house, talk to us about what the day looks like before you book. We would rather plan it with you honestly than have anyone surprised on arrival.
Choosing the house by team size
For a team of up to eight, Troon Ranch Casitas in North Scottsdale gives you four bedrooms across three casitas on a working horse ranch, with a shared pool and spa among the boulders and a putting green. It is the right setting for a small leadership group that wants quiet and the desert close by.
For up to sixteen, Wild West Estate near Old Town Scottsdale has seven bedrooms, a pool with swim-up bar, a putting green and bocce. Restaurants with private dining rooms are a short ride away, which makes evening plans easy.
For up to thirty, Valley Vista Estate in Paradise Valley has eleven bedrooms, eight full and two half baths, two primary suites and a detached casita, behind a private gate. Executives can have their own space while the team shares the main house.
Pairing the house with a venue
The pattern that works for most companies is to sleep at the house and meet at a venue. Scottsdale has resort meeting rooms, private dining rooms, golf clubhouses and dedicated event spaces in every price range, many within a short drive of our houses. A venue gives you AV, catering and a room built for presentations, and it keeps the house a place to rest.
Tell us the shape of your program and we will suggest venues close to the house you are considering, so the commute each morning is ten or fifteen minutes rather than forty.
Outings that do the team building for you
The best retreat moments often happen outside. A few that work well for teams:
- A sunrise hike at Pinnacle Peak or in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve
- A guided rafting trip on the Salt River in the warmer months
- A round at Troon North, TPC Scottsdale or another of the area's courses
- A spring training game in February or March
- A guided food or wine tour in Old Town
- A private chef dinner at the house for the registered team
A simple three-day shape
Most of the company trips we host follow a similar outline, and it is a good starting point for your own plan.
- Day one: arrive in waves, settle in, a private chef dinner at the house for the team
- Day two: a morning session at a nearby venue, an afternoon outing, dinner in Old Town
- Day three: an early hike or a round of golf, a closing session at the venue, departures
- Leave each evening open for the pool and the fire pit; that is where the trip comes together
Logistics for the person organizing it
Name one booking contact and give us the guest list ahead of arrival. Plan airport transfers in waves; Sky Harbor is about twenty minutes from Wild West Estate and Valley Vista, and about forty from Troon Ranch. A driver or shuttle is usually cheaper and simpler than a row of rental cars, and we can arrange one.
Spring is popular for company trips, and it overlaps with the Phoenix Open, spring training and spring break. Those weeks carry longer minimum stays and book early. Fall and late spring offer good weather and more choice. Use Check availability on the house page, or call us at (480) 781-0717 to talk it through.
